As with others in the series, the figures are derived from comic-book sources and mid-century visual archetypes, but here Lichtenstein introduces a dialogue between forms: not just subject and space, but figure and figure.
The composition captures two women occupying a stylised interior, but the scene resists narrative clarity. Instead, the interaction is formal — a study in echoed curves, cropped angles, and compressed perspective. By placing two figures within the same frame, Lichtenstein complicates the image’s spatial balance, drawing attention to the visual choreography of shape and pattern.
Relief printed on Rives BFK mould-made paper, Two Nudes exemplifies Lichtenstein’s late-career attention to scale, surface, and graphic rhythm. The stark contrast between background geometry and the sinuous lines of the figures gives the work a sculptural quality, while its flatness remains unmistakably Pop.
