Based on an official 1977 photograph of Queen Elizabeth II by Peter Grugeon—commissioned for her Silver Jubilee—the work is part of Warhol’s broader engagement with power, portraiture, and media.
In the Reigning Queens series, Warhol turned his focus to contemporary monarchs, applying the same Pop treatment he had once reserved for Hollywood celebrities and American icons. By stylising an official portrait with overlays of abstraction and diamond dust, Warhol both venerates and deconstructs the royal image. The Queen becomes not only a head of state, but a global icon—her likeness reproduced, stylised, and aestheticised for mass consumption.
The Royal Edition, distinguished by the use of diamond dust and issued in a smaller edition of 30, offers a heightened sense of surface and spectacle. It reflects Warhol’s fascination with status and image, while simultaneously bridging the visual language of aristocracy and celebrity culture.
This screen print is signed and numbered in pencil lower right and is presented in excellent condition. Full authentication and provenance are available from Coskun Fine Art.
