Created in 1987 as part of a series commemorating the Apollo 11 lunar landing, these trial proof screen prints stand apart from the standard Moonwalk edition due to their unique compositions. Each of the 66 works in this group features individual variations in screen layering, placement, and finish, rendering them unique within Warhol’s broader print oeuvre.
The source image—a NASA photograph of astronaut Buzz Aldrin standing on the lunar surface—was repurposed by Warhol as a symbol of mass media spectacle. In this work, the moon landing is transformed into a cultural icon, stripped of context and treated with the same graphic flatness Warhol applied to celebrities and commodities.
Certified and stamped on the verso by the Andy Warhol Estate, the publisher, and the printer, this edition carries both conceptual and collector significance. As one of the final sets overseen by Warhol’s studio, Unique Moonwalk exemplifies the artist’s late-career focus on historical mythologies and their translation into image culture.
