Two Nudes, State I (1994) offers a reduced version of the final Two Nudes composition, allowing for a clearer view of Roy Lichtenstein’s process of refinement within the Nudes series. In this early state, the relief print pares back background elements and textures, drawing focus to the linear interplay between the two female figures.
The stripped-down aesthetic enhances the architectural qualities of the composition — sharp diagonals, overlapping curves, and compartmentalised space converge to create tension and symmetry. The figures are handled not as individuals, but as stylised forms in graphic conversation. The absence of interior detail removes distractions and foregrounds the logic of the image: this is structure masquerading as scene.
This version highlights Lichtenstein’s formal thinking, where adjustments between states offer insight into how compositional weight and visual balance evolve. The minimalism of State I offers a cooler, more meditative reading of the image compared to the fully developed edition.
Printed on Rives BFK mould-made paper, and inscribed State I, the work is signed and dated ’94 in pencil lower right. It is offered by Coskun Fine Art in excellent condition, with full authentication and provenance available upon request.
