Nude with Blue Hair, State I (1994) is a rare alternate version of Roy Lichtenstein’s celebrated Nudes series, produced during the final phase of his printmaking career. Issued by Cohen Taylor, this large-format relief print features the same composition as Nude with Blue Hair (Corlett 286), but in an earlier visual state—offering unique insight into Lichtenstein’s iterative process.

Executed on Rives BFK mould-made paper, the print reflects Lichtenstein’s refined approach to line, form, and surface during the 1990s. Here, the female figure is rendered with clarity and restraint: the composition is more linear, with simplified planes and fewer overlapping elements compared to the final state. This creates a more architectural rhythm to the form—highlighting Lichtenstein’s interest in structure as much as subject.

The work is signed “rf Lichtenstein,” numbered, and dated in pencil lower right. State I prints are often sought after by collectors for their direct relationship to the artist’s process and their scarcity relative to the final edition.
