Andy Warhol’s Muhammad Ali portfolio, published in 1978, consists of four screenprints (F&S II.179–182) portraying the legendary boxer at the height of his fame. The works form part of Warhol’s Athletes series, commissioned by sports collector Richard Weisman to capture a new generation of public figures whose fame extended beyond their fields and into popular culture.

Ali, widely regarded as the greatest heavyweight boxer in history, represented more than athletic prowess. He embodied political defiance, personal conviction, and media magnetism. Warhol, whose own practice was rooted in the construction of image, approached Ali as both subject and symbol. The prints were based on Polaroid photographs taken by Warhol in a brief but intense session, with Ali confronting the camera in a series of composed, frontal poses.

Rather than depict action or spectacle, Warhol chose stillness and repetition, focusing attention on Ali’s gaze, presence, and constructed identity. These four prints collectively reflect Warhol’s ability to distil fame into its purest visual form.
